Jakarta Legal Aid Institute

History

The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) was established in 1969 and officially began operations in 1970 with the support of the Indonesian Bar Association (PERADIN) and the Provincial Government of Jakarta. Initially, the legal aid provided by LBH Jakarta was the traditional legal aid, which was offered to those who were economically disadvantaged and unable to access private professional legal assistance. This approach was applied at least from 1970 to 1980.

Structural Legal Aid

In the early 1980s, LBH Jakarta began to apply the structural legal aid approach in handling cases. This approach was taken due to the growing awareness of the economic, social, and political structural inequalities. Legal aid was seen as a means to change these inequalities and create a more just system.

The structural legal aid approach involves not only legal assistance in litigation and non-litigation work, but also advocacy for structural, cultural, or legal changes to promote greater justice. Structural legal aid also requires community empowerment.

An Overview

The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute, or LBH Jakarta, is an organization that operates under the Indonesia Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), providing legal aid to the poor, the legally illiterate, and the suppressed.
